Statement That Animals Have Society But No Culture Notes BA 1st Year: Various definitions given above clearly reveal that society is not confined to human beings alone. The characteristics of society are found even among beasts and birds. In other words, there is the existence of society in all creatures. As a matter of fact, the existence of society among animals depends upon their relations of mutual awareness. This consciousness is visible in the animals. The animals are found living in harmony and advancing to defend themselves in case the other animal of their species is in danger. Mutual cooperation is seen in the termites in the form of the division of labour.

Conditions Essential for the Creation of Society:

According to Kingsley and Davis, the conditions essential for the creation of society are as below

The organisation of Members:

Organisation is imperative for social unity. This is possible only when there are some necessities on the basis of wh the relations between the group and its members may be made stable.

Population:

We cannot imagine a society if there is no population. The population is essential for human beings, animals and for birds. In order to have a population, society works in the following direction :

• Arrangement of food for its member.
• Defending against natural calamities and other disasters.
• Continuity of procreation.

Level of Association:

The level of association means the condition of joint working due to mutual dependence. This is of great need in the creation of society. The characteristic of association is found in all creatures including human beings to a smaller or greater degree.

Division of Labour and Specialisation:

There is a need for division of labour and specialization for the proper execution of group activities.

Continuity of Society:

The existence of society depends upon continuity. Every society has its social organisation. In such an organization there is peace and safety. It is imperative for a social organization that it remains continued from generation to generation. Human beings and animals like birth and die, but there is no continuity of them in that manner. But if society dies like that, the entire concept of development would be devastated. Hence,° society makes such arrangements that remain continued for a time to come.

The above fundamental elements are found in every society whether is of human beings, of animals, or of some other creatures.

The animals having the same interests and objects are seen living together. The dog lives in the company of other dogs. The cow lives in the company of other cows. There are characteristics of similarities and dissimilarities even in honeybees. They also work cooperatively. There are several animals living together in groups, grazing together and working in cooperation.

Monkeys are more social than the rest of the other animals. They also observe many human instincts like conflict and cooperation and division of labour.

Despite all this, one should admit that although the characteristics of human society exist in animal society, in an unorganised, and incomplete manner.

Animal society is not developed like human society. Their social structure is very much simple, and their social relations are very much limited.

Animals Have No Culture:

Animals have society, but they do not have any culture. Human culture involves all that they have secured in the social and philosophical fields. Culture is something that is handed over from generation to generation. It is obvious that animals are not philosophical. Animals learn through the process of trial and error, having no efficiency in learning through the experiences of their ancestors. That is why they do not have any language development. They do not have any decision-making capacity. They do not have any sense of art, music, sports, morality or literature etc. Thus, we find that, though the animals have a society, They do not have any culture.
